Codependency within the family unit and enabling individuals battling addiction problems are very very common. It's often wise to practice tough love with addicts because eventually their addiction becomes more important than the relationships of those around them. When addicts reach recovery, they often feel an extreme amount of guilt for the things that they had done to harm their relationships with friends and family.
